December 1999

12/31/99

Well folks it is the last day of 1999 and we all are impatiently waiting to see what midnight will bring upon us.  Personally my only concern this evening will be trying to get home safely so I can go to work at the fire station in the morning.

Things around the site have been really slow lately since I decided to take some time off and spend it with my family and friends this Holiday season.  The fact that I had a complete system failure on my main box a couple of weeks back (seems most likely a very destructive virus) also left me a little frustrated and I have spent several days trying to get things back to normal.  I should have a few new things to offer in January including some introduction information concerning ALPHA's newest heatsinks, my own UH X2 cooler project, and the first of a series of articles concerning the plexi-glass cased liquid cooled system.

I truly appreciate all the Holiday greetings I have received and I have taken the time to personally answer each and every one of them.  Stay tuned folks cause there is gonna be some interesting stuff here.

For those of you interested you can check out a live webcast of Time Square tonight.

Alrighty kiddies It looks like Santa finally has a winner for the UnlimitedHardware "Dear Santa" give-away contest.  First off on behalf of Santa I (John Bogush) would like to thank all those that took the time to create and send in an entry.  There were almost 500 emails and after narrowing down the field the crew of Tampa Fire Rescue Station 14 and my dear wife helped decide the winner...

Congratulations to Timothy Chan

  Timothy submitted the following entry...

Dear Santa,

I am biomedical researcher at Johns Hopkins Oncology Center.  My name is Timothy A. Chan and I am trying to cure cancer.  At the Oncology center, I have been using bioinformatics and complex analysis of human genome sequences to understand what genes become dysfunctional in cancer and in doing so, develop therapies that affect those genes and kill cancer cells.  Currently, because of lack of funds, I am using a single Pentium Pro 180 to analyze the complexities of human genetics and a bump to 600Mhz would do wonders for our efforts to come up with a cure.  And, if we do it, we will have unlimited hardware.com, proton computers, and of course you, Santa,  to thank for it.  In fact, we would be so appreciative as to praise you, Santa, and unlimitedhardware.com and Proton Computers for their kindness in many nationwide press releases!

Thank you sincerely,
Timothy Chan

The entry deadline for the "Dear Santa" contest has now passed, Santa is not accepting anymore letters. Thanks to all those who got their letters in on time and good luck. The winner will be announced before midnight (Eastern Standard Time) 12/24/99.

Special thanks to Proton Computers for sponsoring the UnlimitedHardware "Dear Santa" give-away contest.  Please pay them a visit and check out their Christmas specials.

12/10/99

OK folks, I know my schedule has forced me to neglect the site a little this month but I can make it up to ya I swear.  How about I give away some hardware?  Ya thats right, a Christmas give-away contest and the winner will receive a sweet box of high performance hardware courtesy of Proton Computers.  The prize package will consist of...

bulletA Pentium III 450MHz processor that runs stable at 600MHz
bulletAn ALPHA SECC2 Heatsink assembly
bulletThe winner's choice of either a SOYO 6BA+III or 6VBA-133 motherboard

12/25/99:   The contest is now closed.

12/04/99

Well I guess it has been a while since the last news update so here we go...

It is now almost 100% unlikely that the UH X2 PPGA cooler modification will ever make it to the market.  I seem to have a poor ability when it comes to seeking inexpensive manufacturing support for specialized low volume products.  The problem is that nobody seems to be able to manufacture the parts for these projects at a (or close to) a reasonable cost since the volume is relatively low.  Anyway I do plan on writing an article including instructions and a template so the UH X2 can be a do-it-yourself project which is very easy with simple hand tools and inexpensive materials.  Look for the article just after the beginning of the year.

Another project of mine which is slowly coming about is the clear plexi-glass cased liquid cooled system I have been planning.  Thanks to 2CoolTEK I have now procured two 120mm Panaflo fans which will carry the duties of keeping the system's "radiator" supplied with fresh air.  These Panaflo fans are very quiet and that was my primary reason I chose them.  Although not directly related to the project Ian from 2CoolTEK threw an Everglide Attack mouse pad in the box along with the Panaflo fans.   If you are a gamer then I seriously suggest getting an Everglide pad for yourself because they truly do make a difference especially in first person shooters.

3D Spotlight has whipped up a review on Creative Lab's GeForce base 3D Blaster Annihilator video card.  Some of what 3D Spotlight had to say...

"Creative Labs is one of the few companies sporting the new GeForce chip. The Creative Labs Annihilator is a standard plain SDRAM based GeForce however that doesn't mean it won't perform well, and I think you know what I mean."

For those of you who have never visited Benchtest.com then I suggest you do so.  Jim from Benchtest.com has for about the last year been refining liquid cooling techniques for slot1 and now PPGA processors.  He is an excellent craftsman with good sound ideas and things are about to get better because Benchtest.com and 2CoolTEK have organized an affiliation which should result in some interesting products.  I have traded email with Jim a few times and his ideas have been instrumental in developing my own cooling systems.
